The Fun Doesn't Stop in Margate!

When most people think of Margate, they picture sun-soaked beaches and bustling boardwalks during the summer months. While Margate certainly thrives in the summer, this charming coastal town and its surrounding beaches come alive in a different way when the leaves start to change and the crowds thin out. Margate and its neighboring beaches offer a delightful array of events, year-round businesses, and fall festivals that make autumn an excellent time to visit.

Lucy the Elephant is a six-story elephant-shaped example of novelty architecture, constructed of wood and clad in tin in 1882 by James V. Lafferty in Margate City, New Jersey, approximately five miles (8 km) south of Atlantic City. Originally named Elephant Bazaar, Lucy was built to promote real estate sales and attract tourists. The Downbeach Seafood Festival kicks off at the beginning of the season during the second week of September. This seafood lover’s dream features over 25 local seafood restaurants and purveyors serving up their delicious dishes! This is the perfect opportunity for foodies to meet some of Atlantic County’s most unique chefs all while eating their tasty creations. From clams to calamari, oysters to ahi, and even alligators, The Downbeach Seafood Festival will have it all! At the end of September, Margate hosts its FREE Fall Funfest by the Bay which celebrates the beauty of the bay area and the promenade along the water on Amherst Avenue. This incredible event brings in over 20,000 visitors each year and features over 110 booths and amusements from mouthwatering foods to artisan fine arts and crafts. With live bands on multiple stages, multiple parades, and the Steve and Cookie’s Dog Show, there is no shortage of entertainment during this weekend. The first day of this event is followed by the Funfest After Dark adult event with a wine and spirits tasting and an abundance of adult fun!
